There is a glut of advice on search engine optimisation, but it should be taken lightly. Even now it surprises us by just how much disinformation is out there, and more alarmingly how some agencies still base their approaches on inaccurate information.

  1. Don't create multiple sites using different domain names thinking this allows you to cash in on key words. There are companies out there who still believe multiple sites will allow you to dominate the web space, it's not true. What happens in reality is you will have duplicate content across your sites, product descriptions can be seen as duplicate content too. Search engines will rank your sites low. Keeping multiple websites updated is a headache and waste of resource.

    Solution: use redirects on the domain names and create specific landing pages within you site for the url's.
  2. Multiple website search engine submission, submitting your website multiple times or just once has little relevance to a search engine indexing your site. Nobody really knows how search engines see these actions but from our experience it yields little or no discernable benefits to submit a site more than once.

    Solution: Symbue submit websites to all leading search engines when a project is complete. We will also re-submit areas of websites when new sections come on line. This procedure ensures that new pages get indexed on the next crawl. Even if your website is not submitted to Google your pages will still be crawled but it can take slightly longer.
  3. Linking can be bad for your websites health, despite all the advice out there people still link to link farms. If you get an email from a third party asking you to link to them its invariably a link farm. Dont dismiss it straightaway it's your responsability to check the web site out and make an informed decision.
  4. Google site maps, if your site has been made spider friendly you certainly don't need a Google site map. Symbue creates spider friendly websites.
  5. Frequent site updates wont increase your page rank, in fact it just ensures search engines hold the most up-to-date information about your pages. Some of the best ranking sites in Google haven't been touched for years.
  6. Its not true that SEO copy must be 250 words in length, shorter or longer copy can rank just as well, the thing to remember is you are writing for the user, if your subject demands more then write it.
  7. Meta keywords, dont have to be an exact match to your content. In fact the keyword meta tag is for words that don't appear in your content, however, it's not important anymore as Google disregards them and uses page content for its ranking.
  8. Relevant inbound links will get your website noticed and improve your rank if they are from authorative websites.
